"Thanks so much for your expertise in every regard. You are a master at what you do!!! And the best teacher I have ever had. I’m grateful for your showing me how to write and how to love writing by showing me your passion, and by keeping everything in the positive "you can" mode. Thank you for keeping me in my vision, always providing ways to turn discouragement into something positive and growthful. Your sense of timing and knowing what’s helpful are awesome."

The heart of my writing coaching is a collaborative relationship, built on open communication and trust. I recognize that you are the expert on your needs, what works for you, and what you want to accomplish. I am the expert on writing, the writing process, and coaching. We work as a team, combining our expertise. Together we develop a strategy for moving forward on your writing goals. From there on, our conversations focus on your specific writing issues each step of the way. I help you develop your writing ideas through questioning and getting caught up in your subject matter. If you become stuck, I draw on a wide range of tricks and exercises to get your writing flowing again. If life demands make writing difficult, I brainstorm with you until we have a strategy for writing in the midst of your life. I will be honest with you at all times. If I praise your writing, it is not flattery. If I point to weakness in your writing, it is not criticism. I'll point out any writing habits that I see are clearly not working for you. I may suggest a new approach, or you may. Often we'll brainstorm ideas together. The process is energizing and creative. Coaching sessions happen on the phone, in 30-60 minute sessions every week or every other week. I suggest clients use a headset so they can write as we talk. I also recommend clients get an audio recorder that records both sides of a phone conversation. It's very common for a client or me to come up with the perfect sentence or paragraph in the midst of a conversation, and later forget it. Writing doesn't happen overnight--consistency and momentum are crucial. For that reason, I require new clients to commit to at least 6 weeks. Then we jointly evaluate where we are and what you want to do next. Most, but not all, clients use writing coaching on a long-term basis.
